When I first began sketching this Northern Red Oak the ground was green lawn sparsely sprinkled with a few leaves. Next day an 80k wind stripped the adjacent maples and background forest. Can you hear the crunch of dried leaves underfoot? What struck me about this tree was how intensely blue-violet the sky appeared behind it's burnished orange and brown leaves. I painted this picture in the studio from my plein aire sketch.
